  • Artists for Conservation (AFC) is an international group of nature artists with the mission of supporting wildlife and habitat conservation through art. Dutch artist Ria Winters has been a member of this organization since 2000.
Canadian founder of the AFC, Jeffrey Whiting, has succeeded in attracting several sponsors that made the program of ‘flag expeditions’ possible. The goal of these expeditions is to travel to endangered habitats and create artwork that will benefit the chosen area of animal species. Ria was inspired by the tragic extinctions of the Mascarene Islands and chose Mauritius as her project destination. In 2008 her proposal was accepted and in May 2009 she travelled to Mauritius to ‘study, render and support conservation of the endangered species of the Mascarene Islands, with special focus on its birds’.
Ria Winters (1959) has been drawing and painting from a very early age and animals have always been her favorite subjects. This book is both a catalogue of her paintings & drawings shown at the Blue Penny Museum in Mauritius, as well as a personal account of the artist who shares her travel stories and knowledge about the depicted animal species.
